LASIK Surgery

LASIK (Laser Assisted in Situ Keratomileusis) is the most common type of laser eye treatment and often referred to as refractive surgery or laser vision correction. LASIK offers the most advanced procedures to correct refractive errors and is the most frequently performed elective surgery in North America.

The LASIK procedure reshapes your cornea to treat nearsightedness, farsightedness, and/or astigmatism. This is an outpatient procedure and generally takes less than 15 minutes. Allow up to two hours for preparation and post-procedure examination. Preparation includes anesthetic eye drops to numb your eyes and if needed, additional medication to help you relax.

A femtosecond laser is used to reshape the cornea in order to create a flap, fold it back and then remove corneal tissue underneath by using computer-controlled pulses of cool laser light. This excimer laser precisely reshapes the inner corneal layer to improve your vision. The flap is then repositioned.

Following the post-procedure examination, you will be able to go home, although you will not be allowed to drive.

We will give you specific instructions for your eye care during the healing process to ensure the effectiveness of your LASIK procedure. Typically, vision is normal within eight hours and continues to improve over time. In some cases, the full extent of vision improvement may take several months.

To determine the right type of laser eye surgery for you, a pre-procedure consultation with your doctor will help determine which procedure best addresses your individual visual needs based on your prescription, eye health, and any related medical conditions.
