Based in Charlotte, NC, and Rock Hill, SC, our eye and vision specialists are independent primary health care providers who specialize in the examination, diagnosis, treatment and management of diseases and disorders of the visual system, the eye and associated structures. They can prescribe medications and fit and dispense glasses and contact lenses. As eye and vision specialists, our providers treat urgent and ongoing visual healthcare for your entire family.

An ophthalmologist is a medical doctor (M.D.) who manages the complete medical and surgical care of the eyes and visual system.

James Bedrick, M.D. - ophthalmologist in Charlotte, NC, and Rock Hill, SCJames Bedrick, M.D.

Dr. Bedrick attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and graduated Phi Beta Kapa with a B.A. in 1974 and an M.D. in 1977. He served his internship in internal medicine the following year at North Carolina Memorial Hospital in Chapel Hill. His residency in ophthalmology was at the University of Pennsylvania's Scheie Eye Institute and affiliated hospitals. Upon completion of his residency, Dr. Bedrick began his fellowship on the teaching faculty of the Department of Ophthalmology at Emory University, specializing in disorders and surgery of the retina and vitreous. Advanced training and experience in laser and microsurgery of the eye were obtained.

Dr. Bedrick's practice is limited to disorders and surgery of the retina and vitreous (including diabetic eye disease, macular degeneration and retinal detachment), cataract surgery, and consultative ophthalmology. He founded Mecklenburg Eye Associates in 1984 and currently serves as president of the practice.

Board certified in ophthalmology, Dr. Bedrick is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, The Vitreous Society, The North Carolina Medical Society and The North Carolina Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons. He has published scientific articles in the Archives of Ophthalmology, American Journal of Ophthalmology, the Journal of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons and Current Ocular Therapy, and has co-authored the chapter "Diabetic Retinopathy" in the major text Clinical Diabetes Mellitus.

Dr. Bedrick holds a faculty appointment of Assistant Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology in the Emory University School of Medicine, and enjoys teaching residents and medical students at the Veteran's Administration Hospital in Atlanta. He has also lectured to the Departments of Medicine, Pediatrics, Emergency Medicine and Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Charlotte Area Health Education Center. Dr. Bedrick has given presentations on vitreoretinal and laser surgery at major scientific meetings including the Annual Meeting of the American Society of Retinal Specialists, the Southeastern Retinal Seminar at Emory University as well as at the Annual Meeting of the North Carolina Medical Society. He is actively involved in vitreoretinal surgery research to improve patient care.

Dr. Bedrick enjoys going to the beach with his wife, son and and married daughter and son-in-law. His daughter Emily is also a physician currently in her ophthalmology residency at Emory in Atlanta. Dr. Bedrick's hobbies include golf, tennis, hunting, fishing, and music. He is the lead guitarist and a founding member of the classic rock group the RocDox.

Charles Blotnick, M.D. - ophthalmologist in Charlotte, NC, and Rock Hill, SCCharles Blotnick, M.D.

Dr. Blotnick attended Union College in Schenectady, NY, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in mathematics and chemistry in 1988. He received his medical degree at the University of Vermont College of Medicine in Burlington, VT. After obtaining his M.D., Dr. Blotnick performed a postdoctoral research fellowship at the Center for Intraocular Lens Research, Storm Eye Institute in Charleston, SC. The research focused on cataract surgery and intraocular lens implantation. He was co-author of five publications pertaining to the research and studies. These were published in the Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, the American Journal of Ophthalmology, and the Journal of Iatrogenics.

After completing his fellowship, Dr. Blotnick performed an internship at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, TN, and residency at the Kresge Eye Institute of Wayne State University, Detroit, MI.

Dr. Blotnick is board certified in ophthalmology. He is a diplomate of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, the Association of Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, and the American Medical Association. He enjoys hiking, biking, and sports with his wife and two sons.


Daniel Simon, M.D. - ophthalmologist in Charlotte, NC, and Rock Hill, SCDaniel Simon, M.D.

Dr. Simon earned a Bachelor in Science from the State University of New York College at Geneseo, a liberal arts college in upstate New York, and graduated Magna Cum Laude in 1998. He received his medical degree from the State University of New York at Downstate in Brooklyn, NY four years later, prior to a one year internship in Internal Medicine at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York City.

Dr. Simon's ophthalmology training was completed at Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, VA, where he became well trained in all aspects of comprehensive eye care. He has presented clinical research at both the national and state levels, and has received recognition from the Virginia Society of Ophthalmology for his advocacy work on Capitol Hill. His interests include cataract and refractive surgery, glaucoma and oculoplastic surgical procedures, as well as providing quality general ophthalmologic eye care.

He enjoys golfing, working around the house, but most of all, spending time with his family.
